Saint Fiacre’s Garden

Silver stain is a technique going back to the fourteenth century: a compound of silver nitrate is painted onto the glass and fired in the kiln, and the silver actually migrates into the glass surface, turning it a translucent yellow rather than sitting on top of it as paint. We used it here for the garden foliage and the saint’s halo — anywhere the design wanted warm light passing through rather than an opaque colour.
